I never intended to be a mum to five children! Life was a lot easier when we just had the first two. But somewhere along the way I decided the more the merrier! It hasn’t all been plain sailing to get the family we have today, we’ve had baby loss and sadness on the journey too (a story for another time!). But now we are where we are, and amongst the organised chaos that comes with raising five kids, let me share with you how I unwind, keep my sanity, and try and keep it altogether!
Keep Your own Hobbies
Sewing has been my favourite way to do something that I enjoy for a couple of years now. When I first started it was because I needed something in my life that used my brain and was just for me. I love making the children different styles of clothing, searching for new material and generally knowing that I can take a meter of fabric and turn it into something beautiful! I sometimes even do some selfish sewing! This is sewing something just for me and knowing that no one else will ever have the same outfit!
A Little Treat
Just because I’m a mum first and “me” second, doesn’t mean I can’t have a little pamper session from time to time! My favourite treat to indulge in occasionally is to get my nails done. When I sew or take measurements my hands are what people will notice, so having my nails done makes me feel that little bit more professional, and also they look so nice!
The Important One
I absolutely love spending time with good friends! Friends are so important to have fun with, discussing your ups and downs and generally having some time together where you’re not just being a mum. I feel really lucky to have some amazing friends that I see regularly, and I try hard to keep in touch with those friends that I don’t see often. I enjoy having people in my life that make me laugh and keeping friendships going when life gets in the way is tricky. I’ve learnt to try and make the time, send the message, and even just “wave” on social media, anything to show I’m thinking of them.
So there’s my methods for keeping a good balance and still feeling like me! Let me know what works for you, all suggestions welcome.
