So the first week of January is done, and most of the decorations are now packed away. People are now finished being on Christmas mode and some routine is finally returning. I’m bumping into friends who are asking the one main question , ” Did you have a good Christmas?” I obviously smile and reply “Yes it was good thanks, did you?”, but actually I have to confess……… I don’t like Christmas Day!
It’s not that I’m not a lover of Christmas itself, but Christmas Day is never as good as the lead up. I actually prefer everything else that goes before it. For me, the Christmassy feel usually starts when our local garden centre opens it’s Christmas department (probably around October) which I know is far too early for some of you, but for me it starts to set the tone. They have room after room of different displays, which we all love perusing and choosing new items, that we obviously don’t need!
The Kids Craziness
Our three little ones ( aged 7,6 and 3), are the most perfect ages to really get excited about Christmas. To be honest even the older two (aged 15 and 12) still really enjoy it. It’s the kids enthusiasm and love for the whole thing that I really enjoy seeing. I love the way they’re so excited that they can’t hold it in. Holly always gets the giggles, and all of them enjoy getting involved with Christmas activities. I do try and keep them as busy as possible in the lead up to Christmas Eve, otherwise the craziness backfires on me with squabbles!
For me, this is the best day in the whole Christmas period! Christmas Eve is the day when all the excitement that’s been building up completely peaks and the kids just can’t wait any longer. The Christmas feeling really hits home as we get everything ready for the “Big Day”. This year, we did a Breakfast With Santa to fill the morning. This was a really good idea, and I’d definitely do it again. Although it added to the excitement is also gave them something to do so the morning went quicker for them. Then, later on we got the table set and Christmas drinks prepared!
The Day Itself!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy the initial first 30 mins of Christmas morning! The kids opening their presents is obviously fantastic. But, straight after this magical experience is when it goes down hill! There’s packaging and even more packaging to fight your way in to actually play with any of the toys. There’s car tracks to set up and video games to upload. There’s the carnage in the lounge from the mountains of wrapping paper and me trying to pick it up so nothing gets lost! There’s the dinner to start and in amongst this, us adults need to actually get dressed and have a brew! The day itself actually goes in a blur and that’s the bit I don’t like. All that preparation, all that planning, all that excitement, and then its all gone.
So, there you have it, Christmas Day for me isn’t the day that makes Christmas. Christmas for me is everything else that comes before it.
Let me know how you feel about Christmas!
